When I received a commission from
Paul Laurence Dunbar High School (Lexington, Kentucky), I knew immediately that I wanted to set a text by the school’s namesake for the project. I shared several options with director Tiffany Marsh, and together we selected
Thou Art My Lute. It was premiered in October 2018, was subsequently performed at the KMEA conference in Louisville in February 2019, and continues to be sung almost annually by the PLD Choirs.
